Hats & Helmets
A purpose-made riding hat or helmet which meets required safety ratings and standards is essential equipment for a young rider, and no child should be in the saddle without one.
Some parents think a bicycle helmet offers sufficient protection on horseback, but this is not the case: for one thing falling from a horse saddle is much higher than falling from a bicycle, and when falling from a bicycle it is the front and top of the head that is at risk, as opposed to the back of the head when falling from a horse. The design is therefore quite different.
It's also wise to remember that equestrian helmets are designed to sustain only one impact, so they should be replaced after an accident.
There are different designs of riding hats and helmets available, from traditional velvet hats to skull caps with interchangeable coloured silks.
